Autobahn Hunters › Privacy

Privacy.

Autobahn Hunters works without accounts, cookies or tracking. Here is exactly what data is still involved and where it goes.

In short

  • We use no cookies, no ads and no analytics or tracking services. You don't need an account.
  • Your location stays on your device. Only when you plan a route or show the next unrestricted stretch is it sent via our server to openrouteservice.
  • Your browser loads the map images directly from OpenFreeMap.
  • The site is delivered via Cloudflare.
  • What you send through the contact form reaches us as an email and is only used to reply to you.

Controller

The controller responsible for data processing on this website and in the app is:

When you visit the site

Every request to this site passes through Cloudflare (Cloudflare, Inc., USA), which forwards it to our server. The server is hosted by Ionos SE, which operates it on our behalf. This necessarily involves your IP address, the date and time, the requested address, details about your browser and operating system, and the page you came from.

We need this data to deliver the site and to protect it from attacks and overload. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR, our legitimate interest in secure and reliable operation.

Our server does not write access logs. To prevent misuse of route planning and the contact form, it briefly keeps your IP address in memory to count your requests: for one minute for route planning and for one hour for the contact form. After that it is discarded.

Cloudflare processes the data on our behalf and may also process it in the USA. Cloudflare is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, so an adequacy decision of the European Commission applies. If Cloudflare shows a security check, it may set technically necessary cookies for it. More in Cloudflare's privacy policy.

The map

Your browser loads the map images, fonts and symbols directly from OpenFreeMap (Hyperknot Software Kft., Hungary). If OpenFreeMap is unavailable, the map images come from the tile server of the OpenStreetMap Foundation (United Kingdom). An adequacy decision of the European Commission applies to the United Kingdom.

These providers see your IP address and which part of the map you load. According to OpenFreeMap, its regular access logs do not contain IP addresses. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR: the map cannot be shown without these requests.

Your location

The site only uses your location if you allow it in your browser or on your device. It is processed on your device: for the dot on the map, to match you to an Autobahn section and for the alerts in drive mode. It is not sent to us for this.

You can withdraw the permission at any time in your browser or device settings.

Route planning and next unrestricted stretch

When you plan a route, your browser sends the place names you type (for suggestions) and the start and destination to our server. When you show the next unrestricted stretch, it sends your current location and the start points of the nearest unrestricted sections. Our server passes this on to openrouteservice, a service of HeiGIT gGmbH in Heidelberg, Germany, and receives the route, distance and travel time.

openrouteservice only sees our server, not your IP address. We do not store routes or locations. Only place suggestions, meaning the search text and a roughly rounded area with no link to you, are kept in memory for up to 24 hours so repeated searches are faster. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR: you request the feature yourself, and a route cannot be calculated without passing this on.

If you tap “Apple Maps” or “Google Maps”, the site hands the destination to that app or website. From then on, Apple's or Google's privacy terms apply.

Spoken alerts

The alerts in drive mode are generated by your device. We prefer voices installed on the device. Depending on your browser and voice, however, the browser may use an online speech service from its manufacturer. Nothing is sent to us.

What is stored on your device

We do not set cookies. So that the site loads quickly and remembers your settings, your browser stores the following on your device: your chosen appearance (light or dark), which map layers, the legend and the next-stretch display are switched on, the downloaded section data and map images you have already viewed. This data stays on your device and is not sent to us.

This is strictly necessary for the features you use (Section 25(2)(2) of the German TDDDG). You can delete it all in your browser settings, usually under “Clear site data”.

Where the section data comes from

The sections with no speed limit come from OpenStreetMap. Our server downloads them regularly via the Overpass API. No data about you is involved.

Only if our server cannot provide the data does your browser load it directly from public Overpass servers (overpass-api.de, overpass.private.coffee or overpass.kumi.systems). They then see your IP address. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR.

Contact form and email

Through the contact form you send us the topic, your email address, your message and, if you like, your name. Our server forwards this to us as an email via our email provider and does not store any of it itself. The same applies if you email us directly.

We only use your details to reply to you and delete the message once your request has been dealt with, unless legal retention obligations require otherwise. The legal basis is Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR, our legitimate interest in answering your request.

Your rights

You have the right to access your data (Art. 15 GDPR), to rectification (Art. 16), erasure (Art. 17), restriction of processing (Art. 18) and data portability (Art. 20). You can object at any time, on grounds relating to your particular situation, to processing based on Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (Art. 21). Just send us an email.

You can also lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority, for example the one where you live (Art. 77 GDPR).

There is no automated decision-making or profiling.
