The numbers.

Calculated from the loaded map data. An Autobahn with two carriageways counts once here.

Limited at times

335 km

A limit applies only at night, when wet or at set times.

Variable signs

Unrestricted only while the signs above the road are switched off.

Spoken alerts while you drive.

Tap the speaker on the map. From 50 km/h, Autobahn Hunters tells you when an unrestricted section begins and when it ends.

“In about 2 kilometres, an unrestricted section begins on the A 9, about 12 kilometres long.”

Looks ahead

The app detects your direction of travel and checks the next three kilometres. It ignores sections on the opposite carriageway.

On your phone as an app

Open the map on its own and add it to your home screen. On iPhone via Share › Add to Home Screen, on Android via the browser menu.

Screen stays on

In drive mode, the screen stays on. If the app runs in the background, alerts arrive as notifications as long as your phone keeps location running.

Where the data comes from.

From OpenStreetMap

The map shows Autobahn sections tagged maxspeed=none. The site fetches them via the Overpass API and keeps them in your browser for seven days.

What the map doesn't know

Roadworks, temporary limits and the current state of variable signs are not in the data. Where nobody has mapped a speed limit yet, a section may be missing.

The road sign always wins

The map and alerts are an overview, not navigation. Road signs and German traffic law always apply. Don't use the app while driving.

For comparison: in 2015 the Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt) counted around 18,100 km of carriageway with no speed limit, just over 70 percent of the network. This figure is closest to the “both directions” value above. BASt survey 2015 (in German) ›
